To Alumni/Parents/Friends of West Virginia University throughout Delaware:
I did not know Bob Gibson, but I truly knew his spirit. Even though Father Time has removed me for close to four decades from WVU, the Mountaineer Spirit burns brightly in my heart.
As a native West Virginian, I was born and raised in the steel-producing town of Weirton, West Virginia, the son of Greek immigrants. During college, my financial need required that I work two part-time jobs plus R.O.T.C. For twenty or more hours each week, I would tutor the basketball or football athletes in mathematics or accounting and work in the University's Office of Publications, while carrying an overload of coursework. My goal was to graduate in 3 years to minimize cost. Knowing that the ultimate prize was a degree from West Virginia University made me determined to complete the journey.
This was not only a life altering experience, but the start of a love affair with a great university. This I would define as the Bob Gibson "spirit". And now we can all do our own special part in honoring that spirit by contributing to the Bob and DJ Gibson Scholarship Fund. In his honor, let us help deserving young people reach their educational dreams.
Nothing is more fitting than Jon Hickey's summation in Bob's memory: "Montani Semper Liberi."
